HSSB and the Skeptics Society are co-sponsoring the July Santa Barbara Science Salon featuring its founder, Dr. Whitney Detar, an autism expert, speaking on the anti-vaccination trend.
Despite scientific consensus that vaccines are effective and safe, there's a growing trend of parents choosing not to vaccinate their children. Anti-vaccination myths are contributing to the trend. She will review the science, the contributing psychological factors, and what can be done to reverse the trend.
Dr. Whitney J. Detar is a faculty member in Psychology at California State University, Channel Islands. She received her Ph.D. in Special Education, Disabilities, and Developmental Risk from the University of California, Santa Barbara specializing in Autism. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate students in Psychology, Education, Human Motivation, Parenting and other related fields.
